Product Description Create a wireless network to share high-speed Internet access with computers, game consoles, or media players from greater distances in your home or office. Using D-Link Xteme-N wireless products makes it really easy! The D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router is a draft 802.11n compliant device that delivers up to 14x faster speeds and 6x farther range than 802.11g while staying backward compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b devices. Connect the Xtreme N Gigabit Router to a cable or DSL modem and provide high-speed Internet access to multiple computers, game consoles, and media players. Create a secure wireless network to share photos, files, music, videos, printers, and network storage. With some routers, all wired and wireless traffic, including VoIP, Video Streaming, Online Gaming, and Web browsing are mixed together into a single data stream. By handling data this way, applications like video streaming could pause or delay. With D-Link's Intelligent QoS Technology, wired and wireless traffic is analyzed and separated into multiple data streams. These streams are then categorized by sensitivity to delay, so applications like VoIP, Video Streaming, and Online Gaming are given priority over Web browsing. This enables multiple applications to stream smoothly to your TV or PC. Delivering best-in-class performance, network security, and coverage, this router is the ideal centerpiece for your wireless network in the home or office. Backward compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b devices including game consoles and digital media players

bad product September 6, 2010 Sasha (california) This is just a badly designed product, does not function fully, returned to Amazon next day:
Setup is very hard, and made so complicated, not user friendly at all. The setup doc is not correct. For this kind of product, there should not be any setup needed for connecting to a cable Internet modem. Should just work as soon as powered up. Linksys and Netgear all work straight up without any setup needed. However, this product requires you go through its badly designed device setup procedure for nothing, and user manual suggested incorrect procedure. For example, it says that it requires Internet to set it up. Well, I need it to be set up to have the Internet to begin with, right? What a Chicken and Egg procedure is that? For masses of novice users, it is all trouble. After I took a lot of time to set it up, it still does not work with one of my computer on the wireline port connection, and it also does not work with my wireline connected network printer. This rounter just can not sense this network printer on the network. Both of these 2 devices were working with my old Linksys rounter before I installed this router. All the WiFi functions seemed working. Without hesitation, I returned this product to Amazon the next day. This product wasted me a lot of time, not worthy of the money saved from its cheap price. D-link needs to seriously improve its product quality, design, and user friendliness. I remember now I had a similar problem 10 years ago when I bought a simple D-link router for really cheap sale price and returned it next day for it was not fully functional either.
Buy this now! September 5, 2010 Ralph Nicolay (San Diego, CA USA) I have been looking to upgrade my 8 year old 2wire modem/router for a few months. I researched numerous models and brands and this one seemed to be the best for me. Price was good and I received my order in less than two days using the $3.98 Prime shipping option.
Pros - Fast connection and super transfer speeds.
Easy to set-up
Great range
Cons - The only thing I had a problem with was pairing this with my old modem/router. I wanted to use my old router just as a modem and the new one for everything else. It may just have been me, but it did take some time. If you don't have to worry about pairing this with an old modem then set up is a breeze with the included software.
This is by far much faster and has a larger range than my old one. Then again I did upgrade from a 801b to 801n protocol so that could be why!
All in all this is a great router that can stream almost any file and have a great set of security features to keep the neighbors and others out of your network.
Great features, but its no cigar September 4, 2010 B. Natarajan (Belmont, MA United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This router comes packed with features and promise. For them to fulful several things have to come together perfectly, and in most cases they wont.
- Setting up the router was more painful than I thought
- Mixed n and g signals are less powerful than just g, but you can configure something neat here: set up a n and g signal with two different SSIDs, that maximizes performance
- Does not do well with concrete (ie basement) or another wireless 2.4 hz wireless phone nearby. The signal strength can be dramatically different
- Both speedtests and pingtests at various levels of the house seems to work decently. No lost packets, 20-5 core service is downgraded to 10-5 service at the farthest point in the house, which is not that bad.
- Annoying blue lights
- Not a great included manual, just minimal work here.
Bottom line it did not improve signal strength (# of bars) over the g signal, but does improve the potency within the signal, which is what matters.
So, overall decent, but not great product ...which may be true for most routers.
very good range! September 3, 2010 Vivian I bought this router mainly because of its extended signal range feature. I have a 1850sf single story house plus a seperated 250 sf entertainment room 5 feet away from the house. The signal strength is excellent in every corner of the house and in the outside entertainment room as well. We also have a mobile home as a guest house 100 feet away from the main house and I was wishing the signal strong enough to reach the mobile home so the internet can be avaiable to our guest. Guess what? After the setup, I went over one of the room in the mobile home and my laptop can detect the signal! It is not strong but at least there is no problem to go on the internet. I am very happy with this router.
Great router September 3, 2010 CardFan This is a great product. I've had mine for a couple of years or more, and it has performed well from the start. I wish the USB port worked as a print server instead of the patchwork printer sharing setup, but it's a router after all, not a print server.
