Audio perfection! November 21, 2008 I have owned the Z-5500's for over a year now and have not experienced a single problem with the speakers. I had to read through the 1 and 2 star reviews to get a feel for what people thought were valid complaints. br /br /For the peolpe who experienced a problem under warranty then complained because they wouldn't have sound for 2 weeks while the repair was in progress- you rated these speakers 1 or 2 stars, if they are that bad you should just go purchase a cheesy set of speakers and leave these to the true audiophiles.br /br /For the "Electrical Engineer"- I'm a master electrician. The popping you hear is an arc feedback in your electrical system. Replace your mercury or snap switches with quiet switches or get an APC UPS... you really should have decent power protection on all your equipment anyway. Also take advantage of a device called a "Graphic Equalizer". This modern marvel will let you fully adjust all ranges of the audio and your lows will no longer be too low. Jeez! Some "Electical Engineer". br /br /Others complained about failures outside the warranty period. Nothing lasts forever, but does that mean they were crappy speakers while they worked? If you paid $300 and they lasted more than 1 year, you paid less than $1 a day for awesome sound.... and how much did you spend for a coffee at Starbucks every day? I'd rather have the Z-5500's than a Grande!br /br /Sweet sound, shake the pictures off the walls when i want them to, over 1 year and not a single glitch.... get 'em at this really low price! You won't be sorry!!!
Great for the price November 19, 2008 I'm writing this review after few months of the purchase. Its one of the great products from logitech. Its been 5 months now. Its performing very good so far. Good quality...but not sure about the durability...Really creates a theater effects at home. bass sounds amazing...great vibration for the price..i have watched lot of movies in DVD with this system...truly crystal clear sound...ideal for mid sized bed room or living room...so far no complaints...Amazon has delivered me a quality product.
Z-5500's Absolutely ROCK November 14, 2008 This is the second set of Logitech Z-5500 I own. My first set I bought for my computer and have been extremely happy with them. Im no "Audiophile" but I do have a Good ear. the Z-5500's perform well in all audio ranges and they are clean clear and powerful. I bought this second set for use as my home surround sound system on my 47" Toshiba Regza LCD tv. and I have them set up via optical cable (TOS Link) My FiOS set top box, DVD player and Playstation 3 are all going to the TV via HDMI cables then I went from the TV to the Logich pod via the optical cable and I have pure digital sound and video now and they completely rock My old surround sound system I paid $500 for and are total crap compared to the Logitechs. So whether you are considering buying these for your computer or as a home theater system I say GO FOR IT! BUY 2!
Bang for your buck November 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've had this system for about 9 months and use it regularly. I have had it hooked up to a PS2, a PS3, and my PC, using the optical cable for each one. The first thing I noted is the amount of power this little system creates. I've never turned up the volume past the third notch (out of probably 20), which is enough to fill my entire 800 square foot basement full of sound.br /br /I wasn't as impressed with the bass response as most folks seem to be - to me, the best bass response only ocurrs when the system is turned up loud; I wasn't too happy with the bass response at low volumes. One good thing about the bass, however, is it is distortion-free, which is VERY surprising given the low cost of this system. Turn it up as loud as you can and the bass won't distort.br /br /Another problem I noticed is the high-end sound (tweeters) is not that great without the help of an equilizer. For example, if you're going to use this on a PS2 or a PS3, you don't have the ability to equilize the sound, and the high-end sounds don't stand out so much. On a PC, however, one can adjust equilizer settings to create more treble and a brighter, clearer sound, which these speakers can handle. There are no equilizer settings on the Z-5500 - all the user can do is adjust the independent output levels of the subwoofer, center channel, and rear channels. There is also no right/left balance adjustment, which might peeve some people who have their speakers set at unequal distances from their TV/PC.br /br /The remote for this unit is very, very basic and shouldn't cause anyone some heartache. Logitech does sell a nicer remote which integrates more of their components, however.br /br /The "effect" settings are fun to play with, but often don't do much of anything. One thing that is important to remember - if the user is going to use this system with a PS2 or PS3 for watching movies, be sure to go into your console's settings and enable DTS and Dolby Digital through the optical output. My PS2's default setting had these disabled, and the Z-5500 wasn't picking up the true 5.1 surround signal on the DVD. So for a couple months I was unimpressed with its surround capability and was instead watching movies using Pro Logic II, which isn't as impressive as true 5.1 surround. After enabling the settings, the difference is quite noticeable, and both DTS and Dolby Digital movies sound as they should.br /br /The rear and right/left speakers are mountable to a wall, but I struggle a bit with the ability to position the speaker to face the direction I want after mounting. I did modify a speaker stand to accept the surround speakers, so if you're crafty, you might be able to make an attractive rear speaker setup instead of setting these on the floor or drilling them into your walls.br /br /It's important to note also that this system still draws a quite bit of power when it is turned off (as many components do these days). This to retain any settings you have made. In the manual, Logitech recommends actually shutting down the power switch on the back of the subwoofer when not in use. Since I built my sub into a cabinet, I don't have that luxury, so I just flip the power strip switch and lose my settings each time, which doesn't take a whole lot of tweaking to restore each time I power it back on.br /br /All in all, I'm very satisfied with this system given its price point. I had expected to spend about $100 more than this for something with the same features, so you really do get a lot of bang for your buck with the Z-5500. Although compatible with console systems, the Z-5500 really shines on a PC - for games or for music - where the user has the ability to turn up the treble a little bit. The sound is rich. I recommend it with 4 stars.
Logitech at it's best November 3, 2008 This system is fantastic, especially for the price! Everything in it's technical description plus more. I would NOT recommend EVER putting it in "boost" mode. The quality is terrible even with the sound card I have. It also damages your speakers if you do this for pro-longed periods of time. A con I have is the following: Logitech forces almost all vocals in a song/whatever out of your center speaker. I wish to see that Logitech evenly distributes vocals to all satillite speakers. Console is easy to use, and very sleek looking, without sacrificing things you can do with it. I recommend not taking off the face-plates on your surround speakers, due to the fact of sound quality. Sub is great in various ways. Overall this system lets you hear things you never heard before!!
