The 3Com Power over Ethernet Single-Port Midspan Solution can power an IEEE 802.3af compliant device, such as the 3Com Network Jack, over standard Category 5 or 5e Ethernet cabling. This 48-volt inline power source installs right in the switch closet, eliminating an exposed power supply and extra wiring at the workspace. Installing Power over Ethernet helps save time and money because it's less vulnerable to damage or tampering than a local power supply.

POE Midspan Power Work Great But Currently Over-Priced December 5, 2008
I've used these for home network security cameras and found them to perform very well and exactly as specified. I got two of them on Amazon for $14.99 ea plus SH a couple years ago and now they have myteriously doubled in price. These are not expensive to manufacture and could still sell today for that price if it were not for business buyers driving up the price by assuming the more expensive POE power supply devices must be more reliable.
