5 out of 5 stars Outstanding   January 8, 2009
Very easy to use and set up. Quality is excellent. I am making MP3 from some records I got in Japan during the 1960s and using Audacity makes it a breeze. No problem using on my desktop with Windows Vista and my laptop using Windows XP.

3 out of 5 stars Beware Software   January 8, 2009

The turntable itself is OK, but Audio-Technica could have more concern for the consumer who buys the product and isn't a techie. (I am not a complete tech idiot.) If you have had lots of previous experience with audio, then maybe you'll be OK. As for me, and my friends who helped me try and understand the recording process, this is definitely not a "plug and play" unit. It seems that Cakewalk and Audacity do the same thing, so to begin with, it is confusing to have two software packages included in the package. (It's not as if one is for recording and the other is for sound editing.) After spending a few hours to try and get Cakewalk to work, I had to contact their Customer Service, which is virtually nonexistent--you can only reach them through email, and you'll wait a day or two for a reply. In my case, their "fixes" only made for more questions. Audacity was much easier to work, but you have to download their instructions, which still seem to be written for an audio engineer and not a beginner. While I have about 50 LPs that I want to transfer, I am looking into having them done by a professional recording service at about $12 each, as this will save me lots of frustration and time in the long run.

4 out of 5 stars No Longer Skeptical   January 7, 2009
I must confess that I was very skeptical when I received the AT-LP2D-USB as a Christmas gift. The reviews I read initially were scaring me a bit. In fact, I waited almost 2 weeks before I took it out of the box (I weighed returning it for several days).br /br /But, I'm glad I did not. Granted, it is not the most sophisticated machine out there (read other reviews). But, it is certainly easy to hook up (I tried both the USB connection and the line inputs - both worked very well. The housing is kinda cheap (plastic) but for the money, well worth it (I don't plan on throwing it or hitting it with a stick any time soon).br /br /I was quite impressed with how easy it was to hook up and within minutes, dragged out an old LP from my collection and converted my first song. Before going too deep into it, I decided just to play around with the software and its features to get the feel of it. If I could suggest anything, it would be to include more information on the software, its features and their uses. THe booklet skimps on this quite a bit and forces the user to either conduc their own research or experiment.br /br /I look forward to finally being able to convert all of my LPs (some 45-50 years old) and having access via my IPod. Next, maybe I'll attack my old 8 Track collection.....br /br /So far, well worth the money!

4 out of 5 stars USB Turntable   January 6, 2009
The turntable worked great with my WindowsXP computer. The software enclosed was very user friendly, giving step-by-step instructions that were easy to follow. I preferred using the enclosed audioPyroLE program for burning records to CDs rather than the Audacity program. It was more clear on directions. However, PyroLE only let me save in a WAV format rather than an MP3 format, using more drive space. I haven't tried the Audacity program saving to MP3s yet. I also did not like the length of the built-in phono plugs because they're too short to use with my old stereo system, so I need extensions. br /All in all I am pleased with the turntable and sound quality.

2 out of 5 stars Need engineers degree   January 6, 2009
Instructions poorly written for anyone without an engineers degreee. Booth as to set up use of softwear.br /My unit was defective inasmuch as the tone arm would not track across the records.br /Returned for refund
