Amazon.com Product Description--May 8, 2008
If you're looking for the ultimate portable GPS navigator, you've got to consider the 930 series. TomTom's 2008 flagship models bring all of their technological advancements together with ease of use, a sleek design, and a TMC traffic receiver with a 1-year free subscription (that's the "T" part in "930T") to present a severely cool device. For a couple of year's now, TomTom's been driving forward community-driven navigation features. They began by introducing with Map Share, which lets you instantly modify street names, street direction, and custom locations called points of interest (POIs) on your own device, then upload them to TomTom's HOME network and download changes made by all of the other users. When you do this, TomTom gets to find out what routes your device has been taking. The data is anonymous, but it's given TomTom an enormous pile of route and speed data, which they've used to tie community data to routing with their new IQ Routes#153; feature, which calculates routes using the actual recorded average speeds of travel to calculate your trip rather than posted speed limits, giving you an extremely accurate prediction of how long any given route will actually take at any given time. br br As last year, the difference between the 730 and the 930 models is the "Enhanced Positioning Technology". The 930 contains some onboard accelerometers and gravity sensors that help it figure out where it's going even if you lose satellite signal for a few minutes, which can be incredibly useful in cities with a lot of tunnels or "urban canyons" of tall buildings.br br There are a host of other interesting features, and you can read about them here.br h2br /h2 h2img style="width: 303px; height: 225px;" alt="" src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/gps/tomtom/detail-pages/lifestyle.jpg" align="right" hspace="10" vspace="10"/h2 h2Key Features and Benefitsbr /h2 ul lispan style="font-weight: bold;"span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);"NEW/span--IQ Routes /spanalways the smartest route based on actual average road speeds (Learn more)br /li lispan style="font-weight: bold;"span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);"NEW/span--/spanspan style="font-weight: bold;"Advanced Lane Guidance /spanmakes difficult junctions easy to navigate (Learn more)/li lispan style="font-weight: bold;"Traffic-Ready /spanwith included RDS-TMC traffic receiver and 1-year free subscription to RDS-TMC traffic service.span style="font-weight: bold;" /span(Learn more)br span style="font-weight: bold;"/span/li lispan style="font-weight: bold;"Enhanced Positioning Technology/span gives you uninterrupted navigation, even in tunnels or highly built-up area (Learn more)/li lispan style="font-weight: bold;"Easy to Use/span right out of the box (Learn more)br /li lispan style="font-weight: bold;"Latest Map Guarantee/span means if a new map is released within 30 days of purchase, you can download it for free from TomTom HOME (Learn more)/li lispan style="font-weight: bold;"Voice Address Input /spanlets you speak your destination, and TomTom will do the rest (Learn more) /li lispan style="font-weight: bold;"TomTom Map Share/span lets you instantly modify street names, street direction and POIs on your own device and benefit from others' corrections (Learn more)/li lispan style="font-weight: bold;""Help Me!" IQ Routes uses historical road-speed data from millions of TomTom users to calculate your optimal route for that specific time and day. Giving you local knowledge on a global scale..br br We all know traffic is different during a Monday morning rush hour from a lazy Sunday afternoon. And we all want the best shortcuts to bring us to our destination in the fastest way possible. But heavy traffic, speed bumps, traffic lights, rotaries and even pedestrians or shopping crowds can slow you down. That handy shortcut you're looking for changes depending on the time and day so the shortest route isn't necessarily going to be the fastest all the time!br span style="font-weight: bold;"br Let's take an example:/spanbr ol liThe standard shortest route from Leominster, MA to the downtown Boston shopping district at a relatively quiet time, and without any hold-ups, should take an hour and 18 minutes (screen 1).br br /li liInfographic IQ Routes: However, that same shortest route will typically take you 20 minutes longer during a busier period (reality) (screen 2)br br /li liUsing `local knowledge' gained from the actual travel experiences of thousands of TomTom users on these very roads, IQ Routes#153; instantly works out your optimal route from Leominster to Downtown Boston. It also calculates your realistic journey time, based on real speeds people are able to drive, not just speed limits. (screen 3)br /li /ol br As you can see, in this case your route is now about 15 miles longer, but will save you 12 minutes (and a ton of stress!). Now that's a shortcut! Twelve minutes may not sound much, but it's over 20% off your journey time. Just consider for a moment how much time that will save you over a whole year#133; Exactly! And it's not just urban driving. Whether its roundabouts, crossroads, schoolchildren or just good old-fashioned congestion. Anywhere the traffic flow can vary, IQ Routes can make a real difference.br br span style="font-weight: bold;"How it works/spanbr ul liMillions of TomTom users worldwide voluntarily provide us with anonymous historical speed-data from each of their journeys every time they connect their device to TomTom HOME./li liAs a result, TomTom now has a huge database, containing billions of miles of real customer driving experience, collected over the years from more than 7 million TomTom users./li liUsing this data, TomTom's unique IQ Routes technology calculates your optimal route. This route is based on actual speed data driven on roads, not just maximum speed limits, taking into account any hold-ups that might slow you down (busy junctions, zebra crossings and even shopping crowds).br /li /ul br This data enhances the quality of TomTom navigation across the board, but is particularly helpful in improving the quality of detailed routing we give you for the specific time of day and day of the week of your chosen trip.br br span style="font-weight: bold;"Drive like local/spanbr style="font-weight: bold;" So even if you drive through unfamiliar areas, you still can drive like a local by knowing the short cuts that are based on the collective driving experience of millions of TomTom users./td /tr /tbody /table span style="font-weight: bold;"/spanbr br hr class="bucketDivider" noshade="true" size="1"br h3bbspan style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);"New /span--/b/bspan style="font-weight: bold;"/spanb Advanced Lane Guidancebr /b/h3 table style="text-align: left; width: 100%;" border="0" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="2" tbody tr td style="vertical-align: top;"strongimg style="width: 303px; height: 531px;" alt="advance lane guidance" src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/gps/tomtom/detail-pages/lane-assist.jpg" align="right" hspace="10" vspace="10"/strong/td td style="vertical-align: top;"strongimg style="width: 175px; height: 125px;" alt="" src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/gps/tomtom/detail-pages/lane-assist-icon.jpg" align="right"Extra clarity when you navigate difficult junctions./strong See clearly the lane you must follow at junctions, so you don't miss your turn. At complex intersections, you also get a clear 3D image showing your route through the junction. Leaving you relaxed and safe.br br When you approach complex motorway intersections, you also get a still 3D image on your screen that clearly indicates the lane(s) you need to take. Advanced lane guidance keeps you relaxed and safe through even the most complex intersections and in even the heaviest traffic.br span style="font-weight: bold;"br Let's take an example:/spanbr style="font-weight: bold;" ol liYou're on the outskirts of Paris, driving on the `Autoroute du Soleil' towards Lille, when a complex junction approaches (screen 1)/li liYou have your normal 3D navigation view up to 800 metres from the junction. (screen 2)/li liFrom 800 meters until you're through the junction, your TomTom device displays a clear image of the junction. This shows the relevant road signs with numbers and directions, and a blinking arrow that clearly shows which lane you must take. 5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the Professional who needs directions   January 8, 2009
I have purchased many TomTom Gps devices and I love the simplicity of the device. This upgrade form the 920T is fantastic. Not only does it show you exactly what lane you need to be in but the 3D effects are great as well. I recommend this device to anyone who has a vast knowledge of GPS's and someone who is always on the road alot (delivery drivers, etc). I can't wait until TomTom comes out with the upgrade to this model in the future.

1 out of 5 stars Good when it works...   January 4, 2009
I first tried to buy the 930 on the TomTom website but accidentally bought the 920T as I was looking for the T function (I've since discovered that the T part is pretty useless in the US, but the extended traffic over Bluetooth and your cell phone's GPRS is worthwhile). I called support before opening the box and they gave me an RMA number to return the box at my own cost which I did. That was several months ago and have not heard a word about the 920T or a penny about it ever since.br /br /After receiving the RMA for the 920T, I bought the 930 at the local Best Buy (Should've waited for confirmation about the 920T first). Initially, it would constantly reboot and would always direct me to the HOV lanes regardless of whether or not I told it to avoid HOV lanes.br /br /I discovered that if you connect it to your laptop and run a chkdsk (Windows) or a repair disk (MacOS) on it regularly, it would stop rebooting.br /br /A recent update from TomTom fixed the constantly trying to redirect me to the HOV lanes problems but now the POI icons are difficult to recognize as they shrunk the graphics so they could round off the corners and now, once you've selected "avoid Toll Roads", it won't ask again for quite some time even if you select recalculate route. This is a problem because I like to know how many minutes the toll roads will save before deciding whether or not to use it. Before the update, you could just use recalculate route to get it to prompt on the toll roads again so you could compare the route with and without the toll roads quickly but now there doesn't seem to be an easy or quick way to do it.br /br /The latest update also changed the routing behaviour to preferring the freeways almost religiously. I had purchased this unit for the IQ routes feature and it had been working acceptably with the traffic updates via GPRS to route me on several shortcuts but after the last update, it tends to plop me into horrendous traffic jams on the freeways rather than the shortcuts.br /br /Prior to the most recent update, the voice instructions would come over the FM transmitter through your car stereo but now it would only come over the TT930's internal speaker (probably a good thing as the FM transmitter would be subject to interference depending on where you were). It would've been nice to have the option of the instructions being on both the transmitter and the internal speaker. Also, after the update, the FM transmitter doesn't always stay on but obviously shuts off after a few moments of silence (they probably thought they were extending the battery life). The net effect is that you get static until you start the Jukebox and during the speaker phone calls, you get static over the car speakers after a few moments of the call.br /br /Hopefully, they will fix some of this nonsense in the next release but clearly they don't have a good beta test program.br /br /The latest update also broke the "Operate my Go" feature from the TomTom Home application on the laptop and there appears to be no fixes pending.br /br /The real killer is that while using the unit on a trip to Canada, about halfway through my trip, it just stopped receiving GPS signals at all. Now it just waits for a valid GPS signal and never gets one period regardless of where I am, how long I wait or how often I update the Quick GPS fix data. It wouldn't even route without a valid GPS signal so it was completely useless. At least if it routed then it could still be useful in the same way that Google maps is useful but no, it just sits there waiting for a signal.br /br /TomTom's support is only available during the work day so I'll have to place the call from my office which had poor GPS reception to begin with so we'll have to see if it's even possible to get this problem addressed. It'll also be interesting if the RMA process is more than the black hole that it has been with the 920T. It will also be interesting to see if they will transfer my traffic and redlight subscriptions to a replacement unit.br /br /I don't mind the product not being perfect and having it's peculiar nuances in usage but I do expect it to work for more than a few months. Now it's just a 4GB MP3 player.br /br /As an mp3 player, it would be better if they still sold the iPod cable which they've mysteriously taken off their website.

2 out of 5 stars Catastrophic Mount   December 30, 2008
The TomTom 930T is a good GPS - I guess... However, the fun is taken away from using it when the unit comes of the mount all the time, regardles if you fasten it to the windshield or the dashboard. It happens in particular in cold conditions and leaves me frustrated what to do now. I am waiting for the unit to break the next time when it comes off. The is a major design flaw and hard to understand when you pay good money on this device.

1 out of 5 stars Bad TomTom 930T   December 21, 2008
I purchased the TomTom 930T from Amazon around Nov 22, 2009. I kept it for about 20 days trying to get the features that I paid for to work, first, the traffic reciever didn't work, I was on the phone with TomTom support for at least 2 hours dealing with that, then the advnce lane guidance wasn't going to work in the city I drive most in (Nashnville,TN), no cure for that. Also the speech would break up and even cut out several times per day. I was excited to get this unit for these features. TomTom tech support kept passing the buck, they never woul let me talk to anyone in charge, and never fixed the issues, except they offered to send me a new traffic reciever (so I could stay on the phone another hour or so to try and get it to work). I sent the unit back to Amazon, they asked no questions and gave me a full refund. This reviw has nothing but high prasies for Amazon, but as for TomTom...I will stick with my Garmins I have had for years.

2 out of 5 stars Defective out of the box - they make you pay shipping   December 11, 2008
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

After owning and using various GPS devices for many years, this seemed like a nice step forward. I will never know as the device never worked. It crashed again and again as I attempted to start it for the first time. After spending many hours working at it with TomTom customer support, they reached the conclusion I came to in the first 10 minutes - the device was defective. Although their supportive staff were nice, it took 6 of them and hours to figure out it was defective. THEN they told me that the company policy is not to pay for shipping. They expected me to pay to ship a device back to them that arrived broken. Huh? Does this mean I was very unlucky or that their devices aren't so hot or that there quality control is poor? I don't know. If you buy one maybe you can figure it out.
