I recently used this unit to help navigate Los Angeles freeways-what a mistake!!! This thing almost got me into numerous wrecks!!! Over and over it had me on the wrong freeways, only to re-calculate and take a traffic-ridden time-consuming detour to get back to the correct route. Repeatedly it didn't tell me what turn I was supposed to take until it was too late. Numerous times it had me get off a freeway and take side streets when I should've just stayed on. Total piece of c%#p! br /As I was angrily waiting to get back on a freeway going in the opposite direction because it got confused, I almost took it off the mount (which, by the way, doesn't stay on the windshield-it fell of repeatedly-I finally had to stick the unit on my lap) and threw it against a wall. That was the first time I'd experienced GPS rage...br /br /Luckily, I maintained my cool and I was able to return it and purchase a Garmin Nuvi 760. NO COMPARISON!!! Even the windshield mount has a locking feature that prevents it from falling off. The menus are way more intuitive, and bottom line, it tells you when the next turn is coming up way in advance. Do yourself a favor and stay away from dumdum !!!

This is not my first experience with TomTom. I bought a GO 300 a few years ago because my wife's sense of direction is unfortunately lacking. I also use it occasionally on my commute to work to help find an alternate route when some tailgating fool causes a multi-car wreck on the Interstate or the Beltway. The TomTom has done quite well in that regard.br / The 300 is quite a nice little device despite some small problems (which I believe are common to all auto GPS devices: maps are not always up-to-date, some Points of Interest are missing, difficulty seeing the GPS satellites in the midst of downtown buildings). But after a few years I felt I needed to have one for myself for my commuting and other driving. I decided on the 730 which was on sale in December (and as luck would have it, a week after I bought it here its price was knocked down another [...]). Some of my comments on the 730 will be compared to the 300.br / First, the 730 has a large touch screen - nearly 4.5" diagonally. The whole device is 4.5" wide by 3 1/8" high by just under 1" thick. There is only one button: on-off. Color: black with some silver metal trim. Much more convenient to carry than the GO 300. The image presented is clear and sharp. Might be a bit washed out if hit by direct sunlight. Has map colors for daytime and nighttime driving. You can create your own or download color schemes through the TomTom HOME software that is used to connect your GPS to your computer and obtain firmware/map/voices/etc. updates.br / Menus are very clear. Navigation is done by touching the screen or typing the address you wish to go to. There are several million POIs (points of interest: banks, gas stations, museums, restaurants, shops, et al) for the US and Canada available (as well as for Europe if you wish). If you find that a POI is wrong (wrong location, out of business) or if you wish to correct a POI or map item (one-way street, blcoked street, etc.) the 730 (as well as the x00 and x20 series) lets you correct the map error and upload it to TomTom where it will be reviewed and added to the next map edition or two.
