 Fine DVD Player. TVG option nice to have. December 9, 2008

This is a nice, little DVD player, although shipping brought the total to nearly $60, so I can't say "nice inexpensive DVD player." It set up quickly and works nicely with clear pictures.br /br /I purchased the Memorex because it was the only new DVD player with the TV Guardian chip I could find on the internet. (TV Guardian no longer makes its own players and manufacturers have ceased to include their chip in their newer models because of royalty costs). br /br /It is true that you still have to go to TV Guardian's website to purchase the activation code (a one time $30 purchase with immediate activation)...however after setting up the TV Guardian, we were able to watch several movies as a family that we would not have wanted to before as it removed the bad language. TVG mutes the audio and displays an edited (cleaned up) closed captioned line on screen during phrases of bad language. The movie still plays in the background without missing a beat, but the audio bad language is removed and the story line continues with clean language in the text caption. If that is important to you, then this is a good deal. (See comparison below with Clear Play option.) TVG is about 95% accurate...as accurate as the typed script for the closed caption is.br /br /Although I had already gleaned from my internet search that I would still have to go to TV Guardian to purchase the activation code, I agree with the other reviewer that the manufacturer's description could have made it more obvious that you still need to purchase the TVG activation code from the TV Guardian website. The TVG internet address is on the DVD instructions--which are pretty clear and help you set up the TVG settings fairly quickly--the TVG menu interface was a little quirky but not bad...because of the quirkiness, be aware you will need to tinker with the TVG and your TV's closed captioned settings a little to get this right for your family. TVG allows you to filter at 3 different levels of sensitivity for: profanity, religious, and sexual...you can filter for one of the 3 or none of the 3 or 2 of the 3...put in a known offending DVD and send the kids out of the room until you get it right as the closed captioning will allow you to see the unfiltered words on the screen as you hear them if that particular area filter isn't activated yet to your taste within a phrase...during your attempts at set up your kids can learn how to spell all the bad words they are hearing until you get it right!) br /br /If you desire an option to filter the language in your DVD's so you can watch stuff as a family, this is by far the cheapest method, and allows more freedom than Clear Play, the only other current at home filter option. TVG works with any DVD that has closed captioning (as designated specifically on the DVD cover, usually by the logo "CC" in a box). Be aware most Universal movies do not have CC. Also note the TV Guardian activated chip ONLY edits language NOT video scenes. br /br /In comparison, Clear Play, which does filter scenes and language, requires you to spend $90 on their specialized DVD with flashdrive THEN download their current library from the internet on their provided flashdrive. While the Clear Play DVD player will play any DVD, the Clear Play filtering will only work if that particular DVD movie has a filter in their download library. To get access to the library filters, which are updated regularly, you have to continue a $8.95 monthly subscription...so the Clear Play costs include $90 DVD player, and $108 annual subscription for access to a filter library for currently about 2000 movies (only 20% of which we as a family were interested in).br /br /Now you can see that this Memorex can be a good deal, about $40 for the DVD player, $17 shipping, $30 activation key for the life of the DVD player to filter any DVD that has closed captioning.br /br /I think it is a great deal as no one else seems to still have the TVG chipped players in stock. Digital Jungle shipped quickly and it arrived in new condition.

This memorex dvd with tvg was not advertise to be activated with a price of $29.95. This was misrepresented and I am very upset to know I payed $39.99 for the product another $25.00 to ship only to find out I have to pay $29.95 to use it. I did not see anywhere in the description of an activation fee.
