Product Description The Panasonic DMR-EZ28K DVD recorder is capable of receiving both digital and analog broadcasts. Even when digital signals drop out because of interference with direct signal access, which makes the picture either disappear or become filled with block noise, the Digital Tuner still produces a beautiful picture. Just slip the SD card into the slot or use the cable to connect the camera to the USB terminal, and you're ready to enjoy a spectacular big-screen slideshow with family and friends. You can even listen to music recorded onto a USB device while viewing your photos. Connect your Panasonic DVD recorder to a flat-panel HDTV via an HDMI cable and the TV channel setting information is automatically downloaded to the recorder. Once the Auto Preset Download is complete, the DVD recorder will keep whichever TV channel you're watching as its receiving channel. This means you can record the program you're watching by just pressing the Record button on the VIERA remote. With VIERALink, you don't have to worry about setting the recorder to the right channel every time you want to record something. Frequently used buttons, such as Power and Open/Close, are located at the top of the main unit (this makes them easier to see when the unit is placed in a rack, where you need to look down when operating it). 480i/p, 720p, and 1080i / 1080p only with ujpconversion through HDMI Output Image File Format - FAT12, FAT16 (SD Memory Card) FAT32 (SDHC Memory Card) SD Image File Format - JPEG conforming DCF Image File Number of Pixels - 34 x 34 to 6,144 x 4096 Inputs and Outputs - 2x LINE (pin jack) Analog Audio (2 Ch) Input, 2x Line (pin jack) Video In, DV Input Terminal, 2x S Connector S-Video In, Built-in SD Card Slot, 1x LINE (pin jack) 2ch Audio Out, Component Video Out (Y, PB, PR), and 1x S Connector S-Video Outputs Dimensions - Height 2-3/8 x Width 16-15/16 x Depth 9-13/16 Weight - 6.16 pounds

great picture January 6, 2009 I bought this model based on other reviews, mostly for the similar Panasonic DVD recorder that did not have a TV tuner built in. That model was sold out everywhere, so I got this one for a bit more, and have no info regarding the television tuner portion. I have had four other set top DVD recorders, and they all were at least in the ballpark picture quality wise, for 1 hour recordings. This machine has a fabulous picture, even on 2 hr. and 4 hr. speed settings. It also has the ability to record a flex interval, meaning a 2:15 movie for example will be dedicated to the best possible disc capacity. My other machines require you to run at 4 hr. speed with poor results. The on screen setup and menu are OK, not best in class, but no real complaints. Playback of regular DVD's is also fine. Panasonic is the best I've seen.
User Unfriendly, not recommended for simple off the air recording January 3, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I needed a DVD Recorder with a built in digital tuner. (My other machine, a Toshiba D-R4, only has an analog tuner.) I chose this unit simply because I had Best Buy store credit that I had to use the day I got it, and this was the only DVD Recorder in the store with a digital tuner at a reasonable price.br /br /I use this machine for basic, off-the-air timer recording when I am not home or asleep. And yes, it does the job, and the disks look great. But compared to the Toshiba, it is a major pain to program. The unit takes way too long to start up, and the timer recording process is not easy. I have been programming VCRs to record shows since I bought my first BetaMax in 1976, and I can say without a doubt, this machine has the most user-UNFRIENDLY process for timer recording this I've ever experienced. On top of that, the process for finishing the DVD afterward is also a pain, especially compared to what I was used to with my Toshiba.br /br /Furthermore, when recording a show which is broadcast digitally in 16 x 9, the machine records it as 4 x 3 letterbox, and when you play it back, it appears in a window, so you have to zoom in to fill your screen. There's really no excuse for that.br /br /I can't speak to its editing capability or any of the more advanced functions because I don't use it for anything other than off the air recording.br /br /Therefore, I can't recommend this unit. There must be a machine that has a far better user interface than this has, so do your homework! (I wish I had!)
Great DVD Recorder January 1, 2009 If you have basic cable like I do then this unit is just what you need. I have a DMR-ES25 DMR-EZ27, both by Panasonic and they have worked perfectly since I purchased them from Amazon about 3 years ago! The DMR-EZ27 has the same digital tuner as the EZ28, but no USB port. It grabs hold of the digital channel signal and holds it while recording even when my Samsung Digital TV won't.
Closed Captioning December 31, 2008 On top of the other 5 star reviews for this product, I'd like to add the following:br /br /As far as I know based on my research via Google and forums elsewhere, only Panasonic makes the HD Upconverters that can do Closed Captioning over HDMI. Not only that, its predecessor, DMR-EZ27, and this product does closed captioning over component and HDMI. Unfortunately, only the DVD recorders manufactured by Panasonic have this CC feature. br /br /I have another HD Upconverter DVD Player, an Insigna NS-UPDVD, and it does not support closed captioning (the tech details of why it doesn't work is outside the scope of this review -- use google to find out why). br /br /When I took the recorder out of the box, it was not initially set to closed captioning. You will need to turn on captioning in the DVD Recorder before you can see captions. To verify that the DVD Recorder worked, I put in a Season One DVD of a tv show that didn't have subtitles available (in the USA, they usually come out just in CC, no subtitles at all), and the show displayed closed captions. I'm definitely a happy camper.br /br /So for those who do want to have closed captioning and are looking for a DVD player that does HD Upconversion to your HDTV and also does CC, this is your product. br /br /If you want to use the DVD recorder for recording shows, check out the other 5 star reviews.
good unit December 30, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this unit as a alternative to a vcr, as I am now receiving the digital signal. It connects to my old rooftop antenna, can and I can record tv shows, to dvd ram disk, similar to the way the old vcr did.br /br /Occasionally the unit freezes and I have to press and hold the power button for 10 seconds or so, then it will start up.br /br /I think this unit is worth the $179 that I paid for it.br /
